Fosters Freeze History

Fosters Freeze has been a California tradition since the mid 1940's. The Fosters story begins in 1946 when George Foster opened the first Fosters Freeze in Inglewood, California. He introduced the soft serve cone and a line of soft serve desserts.

The unique product became so popular that he opened a chain of restaurants. As California grew, so did the Fosters concept. Made-to-order hamburgers, fries and other food items were added to the menu.

Fosters Freeze truly could be described as California's fist fast-food chain!

The History of French Fries

Learn about the history of French fries.

Ahh... the good old French fries. Just because of the name, their origin story isn't any simpler.

It is not entirely clear who invented the yummy strips of fried potatoes. Spanish travelers are said to have introduced potatoes to Europe.

According to historical records, somewhere between the 17th and 18th century, Belgians began using potatoes to create thin fried strips.

They would catch small fish and fry them for a quick meal. But during the winter months, when fishing was difficult and dangerous, they decided to substitute potatoes for the usual fish.

French people argue that fries were first created by Parisian cooks under several bridges that cross the Seine River.

However there is no recorded evidence of the invention or who initially came up with the dish. It has been documented that the French never ate potatoes as they believed the vegetable caused disease. The French Parliament banned the cultivation of potatoes in 1748, casting serious doubt that the French created the famous fries.

Nevertheless by the late 1700s, potatoes were declared edible for people in France and eventually French fries were discovered or possibly created by an experimenting cook and the popularity skyrocketed.

Thomas Jefferson is credited with introducing the fries to America when he discovered the snack during a trip to Paris.

In 1802, the White House menu listed "potatoes served in the French manner."

It was a matter of time before french fries made their way around the United States.

Next Time You Visit Foster's Freeze, Enjoy One of Our Most Popular Items....The Corn Dog

Here's a bit of history about the Corn Dog from Wikipedia:

Newly arrived German Texan sausage-makers, finding resistance to the sausages they used to make, have been credited with introducing the corn dog to the United States, though the serving stick came later.[1] A US patent filed in 1927, granted in 1929, for a Combined Dipping, Cooking, and Article Holding Apparatus, describes corn dogs, among other fried food impaled on a stick; it reads in part:[2][3]
I have discovered that articles of food such, for instance, as wieners, boiled ham, hard boiled eggs, cheese, sliced peaches, pineapples, bananas and like fruit, and cherries, dates, figs, strawberries, etc., when impaled on sticks and dipped in batter, which includes in its ingredients a self rising flour, and then deep fried in a vegetable oil at a temperature of about 390°F., the resultant food product on a stick for a handle is a clean, wholesome and tasty refreshment.
In 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles, author Linda Campbell Franklin states that a "Krusty Korn Dog baker" machine appeared in the 1929 Albert Pick-L. Barth wholesale catalog of hotel and restaurant supplies. The 'korn dogs' were baked in a corn batter and resembled ears of corn when cooked.[4]
A number of current corn dog vendors claim responsibility for the invention and/or popularization of the corn dog. Carl and Neil Fletcher lay such a claim, having introduced their "Corny Dogs" at the Texas State Fair sometime between 1938 and 1942.[4] The Pronto Pup vendors at the Minnesota State Fair claim to have invented the corn dog in 1941.[4][5] Cozy Dog Drive-in, in Springfield, Illinois, claims to have been the first to serve corn dogs on sticks, on June 16, 1946.[6] Also in 1946, Dave Barham opened the first location of Hot Dog on a Stick at Muscle Beach, Santa Monica, California.[7]

Of course, all that really matters is that they taste so good!
